Genotype × environment: why expression can move
The same lineage can look different in different environments. A genetics note on phenotype, reaction norms and why provenance should separate parentage from observations.
Genotype is the inherited genetic information; phenotype is the expression you can observe. Environment can shift that expression without changing the parentage written in the archive. That distinction matters when collectors compare old descriptions, breeder notes and photographs from different places.
Aroma intensity, colour, structure and timing can all be described in first-party records, but an observation from one environment should not be rewritten as a universal property of the line. The stable archive reference is the lineage and generation; phenotype notes are context.
Reaction norm, in plain English
A reaction norm is simply the range of expressions a genotype can show across different environments. For a genetics archive, the practical lesson is documentation: keep the observation beside where and when it was recorded, and do not confuse it with a change in ancestry.
This is also why two legitimate photographs of the same named line can look different without one of them automatically being false. The question is whether both can be traced back to the same parent and breeder record.
What the Scouse archive prioritises
Parent cross, generation, breeder, collaboration and provenance come first. Terpene descriptions, visual traits and environmental observations add context after that. The Genetics Library is structured in that order on purpose.
This note is about genetic records, not cultivation. Seeds on this site are sold for adult souvenir collection and genetic preservation; UK cultivation requires the appropriate Home Office licence.
